How To Create A Layered Image On Cricut

image shows how to make single layer images into multiple layers

Have you lot always struggled to plow a Single Layer Image similar a PNG or JPEG into a Multiple Layers Image to utilize in Cricut Design Space? Some may even refer to information technology as turning a PNG into an SVG.

Today, I will show you the easiest and fastest way I know currently. I say currently considering as engineering changes then exercise our crafting processes.

There are multiple ways to get the same end outcome. I am sharing the procedure I observe that is EASIEST and QUICKEST for me.

The great matter almost this procedure I'll teach y'all is that turning a single layer image into a multiple layers epitome volition work whether you lot are using a Desktop, Laptop, iPhone, Android, or Tablet and using Apple or Windows devices. You will run into that I apply Chrome Browser as that is the browser I prefer, which you lot tin can use on Windows or Apple products.

What is a PNG, JPEG & SVG?

These terms and abbreviations reference unlike File types that many crafters use with their cutting machines. Obviously, these file types are saved and used for many different reasons, but I will cover why we utilize them as crafters.

Proceed in mind, there are other file types crafters use such equally .DXF, .ESP and .PDFs, merely for the purposes of this tutorial I will be roofing how to change a unmarried layer such as a .png or .jpeg into a multiple layers image such as a .svg for use in Cricut Design Infinite.

Brief Descriptions of each File Blazon

  • .PNG – Portable Network Graphic: (Raster File) Ideal for uses such as Digital Art, Logos and Icons ETC. It besides can exist saved equally a transparent file (articulate background) and uses 24-bit colour which supports over sixteen one thousand thousand colors. PNGs are also one of the largest file types.
  • .JPEG – Joint Photographic Experts Group: (Raster File) A pixel based raster file mainly preferred for photographs and can be compressed really modest unlike a .PNG format. When compressed information technology will loose some of the wide color variations.
  • .SVG – Scallable Vector Graphic: (Vector File) Web-friendly vector file. This means you lot can scale the same file really HUGE or actually SMALL and the image quality will remain the same. Generally if you try this with .JPEGS or .PNGS your image will go pixalated and blurry. Now over again, there is much more than to it, just in a crafters world this is a brief explanation as to why it matters to apply which file formats to utilize or fifty-fifty pattern.

Why exercise I need to change a Single Layer Image into a Multiple Layer Prototype

There may exist multiple reasons why depending on your project, but allow me give you a very common reason I've heard from so many of my readers. I often go emails asking how to practise this process which is why I decided to add it to my blog and as well a YouTube tutorial for the visual learners!

It is literally one of my near asked questions!

Common Example

Petty Adorable Miss Maggie (seven years former) decides she wants a Unicorn theme for her Birthday just she besides adores colorful rainbows in shades of pinks, purples & gold. You already accept a layered Unicorn pattern you are planning on using just yous only have a PNG file of a rainbow. The rainbow yous found via Google Images is the master colors of Red, Yellowish, Blue, Green, and Purple.

But Little Ambrosial Miss Maggie has her mindset on way different colors to lucifer her Unicorn-themed Birthday Party.

Now with the PNG rainbow file, it's only one layer and you pretty much can only apply information technology as a impress then cut file whether information technology be in cardstock or print so cut HTV project.

We know Piddling Adorable Miss Maggie wants the colors unlike so we know that the merely way to exercise this is to "change the single-layered image into a multiple layered epitome".

Once you change the PNG file into a Multiple layered file or .SVG you can pretty much option any colour for your materials plus utilize a ton of dissimilar materials such equally Glitter HTV or Pink, Royal & Aureate Vinyls to brand your rainbow. You've just opened the door to SO MANY IDEAS and Choices.

So at present you tin meet the why, so permit me show you the how!

How to Change a Single Layer into a Multiple Layered Paradigm

Please keep in listen this procedure is the aforementioned whether you want a 2 layer image or 10 layer image.

STEP i

Locate your desired PNG file and salve it to your Desktop, Downloads or Files folder depending on your preference or which device you are using.

In today'south tutorial, I am using a windows computer along with Chrome Browser, but as stated above you tin be using multiple devices for layering multiple layers.

I will apply a Winnie-the-Pooh image png file found on google every bit an example only for this tutorial. I tin not requite you lot this file as it would be a copyright issue. I am just using this epitome to show you lot the procedure and I am not using the image on a product or for personal gain.

winnie the pooh png file

I then clicked on the image I wanted and chose "salve paradigm as"

showing how to right click your mouse on a google image and choose save image as option

STEP two

I actually don't demand to remove the background from this Winnie-the-pooh image but I will show you lot the process in case you need to use the app someday.

Remove background if needed. Sometimes a file may state that it is a PNG format but when you lot download it somehow a white groundwork is visible. When this happens or if you merely accept a JPEG file that comes with a background then you lot simply remove the background.

My favorite Free site is: RemoveBG

Simply drag and drop your file or utilise their "upload paradigm button" and locate where y'all saved your file. I love the drag and drop!

remove background website picture to upload or drag your photo to remove background

The next stride, download the image. I ever use the free option merely decide which is best for your current project.

I chose the blue button that states: Download

image showing to choose the option button that reads "download"

STEP 3

Turn your .PNG or JPEG prototype into an .SVG format.

My favorite Gratis site is: PNGtoSVG

Whorl down the page for a little flake until you see the "cull a file foursquare" as seen below

image showing to drag and drop a file or choose a file option

Locate your file and then it will show you lot your epitome with little foursquare boxes of color for each layer in your SVG. Count the colors in your pattern and change the number if needed. Information technology defaults to five colors. I changed it to 4 colors for my Winnie-the-pooh image.

image showing to choose number of colors and matching color palette squares to your image

So yes you can change the number of colors by clicking on the + or – button. I ignore the "Simplify" option. And so for "Palette", you want to run into if those colors match the ones in your epitome. If any of them is the wrong shade or color, merely click on the color of the box that is wrong, so with your cursor click on the correct colour in your image. You will observe your cursor shape changes to an "eyedropper tool".

Once your colors all match then click on the "Generate" push button. The SVG will populate to the right of the image y'all were adjusting the colors.

Once generated, click on "Download SVG". You likewise take the option to give a donation if y'all like.

STEP 4

Upload SVG Image into Cricut Pattern Space

Click on "New Project"

"Upload"

"Upload Image"

choose upload and then upload image to upload a svg into Cricut design space

Your prototype will now appear on your Pattern Space Canvas and y'all will see that y'all have each of your colour layers in your "Layers Console"

image showing 4 different colored layers

Step 5

Clean up epitome layers.

When nosotros employ costless applications to manipulate our files we may need to do a little "housekeeping" to clean upward the layers. I like to call it housekeeping LOL!

Information technology really is a simple process and you will do the same process for each layer. Sometimes, depending on your image y'all may non need to do much or annihilation at all. Information technology mostly depends on how the prototype was originally created and how it was saved, which we never really know unless nosotros create the paradigm ourselves.

I have to admit, I've even found some images I had to just walk away from equally it would have been way to much to make clean upwards, and so information technology can vary and I just want you to know this.

This easy procedure uses the Cricut Design Infinite characteristic "Profile". If you would like more detailed easy empathize directions on how to use Contour and many more features using Cricut Blueprint Space, I take my FREE Resource for you.

This process may be easier to larn by watching the video as it seems easier to scout then to read the simple steps.

I starting time at the top layer in the layers panel and click on it. This will highlight your layer as seen beneath

how to contour your individual multiple layers

Then click on "Contour" at the bottom of the Layers Console

image showing where the contour feature is in Cricut Design Space

This is where information technology tin can be confusing if this is the beginning time you've used "Contour" or don't quite sympathise "how" or "why" to use Contour.

Basically choosing contour gives u.s.a. the ability to plow lines or sections of an image OFF (if we don't desire the Cricut to cut it out) or ON (if we do desire Cricut to cut it out)

We accept two options to help u.s. get it done quicker

  • Evidence all contours
  • Hide all contours

This is very helpful because there can be 45 pieces of lines to go rid of sometimes, so at to the lowest degree this fashion we can go our image closer to how nosotros desire it to cut out.

Then nosotros can fine-tune what we But want Cricut to cut by clicking on each part of an prototype we desire to be for Only this ane LAYER.

Below is one I already finished. I but want the Cricut to cut the bottom of Pooh's feet.

So notice how his feet are shaded a little bit darker? This means I turned those beautiful little feet pads on so that our Cricut will Just cut them out and not all those silly lines that are still showing.

image showing how to select outlined portions to turn cut off and on via the contour feature

So past clicking on Pooh's feet pads information technology inverse the color shading so I can go along runway of what I've clicked on.

I promise information technology won't hurt annihilation to just click on/off simply and so you can see what it does. You tin't mess it upward and when you are done you shut this window with the "X" in the upper right-hand corner or simply just click off of it and information technology volition take yous dorsum to your Design Space canvas.

If you observe you forgot to click on another portion, but click on "Profile" again and click on that portion you forgot.

Again, the easiest way to learn Contour is to only play with information technology one mean solar day. Some items are just one solid prototype and tin can't be contoured and then some images accept a bunch we can contour out.

I actually LOVE using contour once I figured it out! You volition as well! You tin do this! I promise!

Echo Process for Each Layer as Needed.

HOW TO Turn Unmarried LAYER IMAGE INTO A SILHOUETTE Prototype

There volition exist times you may want to create a one-colour silhouette or background prototype for your design. Most often for the post-obit reasons.

  • Creating Offsets
  • Main Solid Bottom Layer to add your Multiple Layers Image onto
  • HTV (heat transfer vinyl) Projects – This helps you layer designs without the dreaded vinyl shrinkage heat bug can crusade with using layers on top of eachother such as T-shirts ETC.

This procedure is so super simple it's silly! Remember at the beginning of this tutorial I explained how nosotros download the PNG file to your computer? But then we uploaded that PNG into a website to turn it into a Multiple Layers Prototype?

Well now, we simply get to that same PNG file yous saved and upload it into Cricut Design Space.

Check it out!

While in Cricut Design Space to utilise the Upload and Upload Prototype as shown upward in a higher place. This fourth dimension upload the original PNG file you first saved. So in this tutorial, I will upload the Winnie-the-Pooh PNG file to Design Space.

choosing complex and continue

Cull "Complex" then "Continue". The adjacent screen is shown beneath

apply and continue options

Since the background is already removed, all nosotros exercise is select "Employ & Proceed".

Adjacent, we'll select our "upload type" shown below

choose cut image then upload

Select "Cut Epitome" and so "Upload"

Next, we'll select the aforementioned prototype from our "Recent Uploads" expanse

choose from uploaded designs and add to canvas

Choose the "Uploaded" and so "Add to Canvas"

image shows too large

For some reason, the image may come in HUGE. Simply change the width at acme of DS to something like 5″ so you can see the whole prototype.

Adjacent, we just make each paradigm the same width for the project your want. And so easy! You may need to right-click on the silhouette epitome and select "transport the image to back" so it goes to the bottom of all the other layers you lot created.

It should now look like this.

change width size to make the two images the same size
complete multiple layers image

And there we have the final "Multiple Layers Paradigm" completed and set to size to your liking and then click on "make it".

I really promise this helps respond the many electronic mail questions I get on how to change a single layer image into multiple layered images.

Or fifty-fifty the ever-popular how to make an SVG term.
